Whirlpool to lay off 730 in Fort Smith in October

Whirlpool Corp. of Benton Harbor, Mich., will lay off 730 workers at its Fort Smith plant in October as a plant in Mexico becomes operational.

Whirlpool employs 68,000 people and has nearly 50 manufacturing facilities and technology centers worldwide. Last year the company had $13.2 billion in sales and earnings of $406 million. Whirlpool currently is working on a $1.7 billion merger with Maytag Corp. that also was announced in August. The production of refrigerator/freezers will now move to a new plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. The Mexico plant will employ 1,000, Whirlpool said.It is the second time this year Whirlpool has announced voluntary layoffs. In August, the manufacturer said it would cut 400 jobs as it eliminated the second line of the Fort Smith plant's third shift. The company employs more than 4,000 at the plant, which makes icemaker components, side-by-side refrigerator/freezer models, counter-depth refrigerators and trash compactors.Whirlpool said it expects that the "vast majority" of the layoffs will be voluntary and part of "the normal attrition rate at the Fort Smith facility." Jodie Lau, Whirlpool's spokeswoman in Benton Harbor, said those employee recalls could occur if the company sees demand rise for the other products the company makes in Fort Smith.

Bosch Gets Super Cool, Yet Heats Up and Continues Caring for the Environment at K/BIS 2006; Premium Appliance Brand Showcases First-Ever Refrigeration Line and New Ranges; Solidifies Position as Environmental Leader

CHICAGO -- Premium appliance manufacturer Bosch showcases its first-ever refrigeration line at the 2006 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (K/BIS), making a complete Bosch kitchen an attainable reality for consumers. The new ENERGY STAR(R) compliant Bosch Evolution(TM) Refrigerators use advanced sensors for optimal temperature control to keep foods as fresh as possible, and are counter-depth, providing a sleek built-in look without the expense.

About BoschCabinet-induced claustrophobia - "It never fails to surprise me when I walk into an open kitchen, and a client has put upper cabinets over the top of an open counter," said Decora cabinets designer, Tracy Foslein of Home Valu Interiors in Bloomington, Minn. "People are spending thousands of dollars to knock down the walls between their kitchens and dining areas, and they've just hemmed themselves in."This problem usually can be fixed by choosing appliance options like double oven ranges, dishwashers that are incorporated into the sink, counter-depth refrigerators and even under-the-counter refrigerators. A kitchen's cabinet space can be planned down to the square inch. Single or multiple installers?Like so many things in life, there may not be a right way or wrong way to implement your complete fitted kitchen. Know your strengths and be conscious of your limits. Let the costly mistakes be minimized, hire professionals to help you execute on your dream space, rather than find yourself fit to be tied!'Getting a new kitchen may seem like heaven, but if you commit some common kitchen-planning sins, you may spend your remodeling project in you-know-where.In a continuing demonstration of the brand's commitment to the environment, Bosch will feature a video outlining its recent green efforts and relationships. These include the sponsorship of the National Building Museum's major exhibition, "The Green House: New Directions in Sustainable Architecture and Design," and placement in the first LivingHomes(TM) project home, a breakthrough concept in prefabricated sustainable housing. Throughout the show, Bosch will also celebrate Robert Bosch Corporation's 100 years in the U.S. by serving a centennial cake in the booth every hour."I see clients come in all the time who just hate their cabinets and have a poor kitchen layout, yet they think they can fix all that by getting a new granite countertop," Foslein said. "Or even worse, they've already ripped out the cabinets and only want to spend half what it would take to do the job properly.Kitchen Clean-upThe least favorite part of any great meal is the clean-up. And the final part of implementing your fitted kitchen blueprint is a thorough review of your design, budget, building code adherence, and construction schedule. Other questions which come to mind might include: Order and delivery times? Taps & Outlets It's so much easier to plan this right the first time, rather than to refit a mistake. Like planning the placement of your appliances, account for the measurements and spacing of water taps, waste disposal, electrical sockets, ventilation, fuse boxes, and gas inlet valves, just to name a few. Galley: A galley kitchen layout means two parallel counter surfaces usually running the length of the kitchen.

Like our human body, we can't change the shape without major reconstruction, so if knocking and rebuilding walls is not in the cards for your new kitchen, expect to work with the existing shape. The most common spaces are classified as L-Shape, Galley, U-Shape, and G-Shape. Coordination of product delivery and installation scheduling?Known worldwide for setting industry standards in quality, quietness and energy/water efficiency, Bosch gives consumers more style and performance options with its expanded lineup of the Nexxt(R) Laundry collection. Divided into five class categories, the front-loading Nexxt line still offers consumers the best in efficiency, quietness and capacity. With the lowest sound rating at each price segment and the largest capacity at several price points, the Nexxt laundry line also offers new features such as the KIDSCARE(TM) and XXTRASANITARY(TM) programs to remove tough stains and eliminate 99.99% of the most common household bacteria, and the AQUAGUARD(TM) program to water-proof outerwear. In addition, Nexxt Washers are not just ENERGY STAR(R) compliant, they already meet and exceed 2007 ENERGY STAR(R) standards. In fact, the Bosch Nexxt 100 series is the most energy-efficient full-size washer in the industry.Kitchen designers may be trained to help customers avoid mistakes, but they all have war stories of being brought into projects only after big problems arise. What are the kitchen- planning gaffes they see most often?Door-smack syndrome - Have you ever been in a kitchen where you've been working at the counter, only to get banged by someone trying to get into the pantry or coming in from an outside door? Consternations such as planning a dishwasher beside a corner sink, or placing the range right in a narrow walk throughway, can be corrected by allowing at least 3 feet of elbow room on either side of each primary work area, and putting key appliances in protected areas."Having that much of an exact wood shade can be very tiring on the eyes," Luck said. "Instead, plan your kitchen cabinets to be two to three shades lighter or darker than the wood tone you're trying to match. It will coordinate, without being too 'matchy- matchy.'\u2009"Code breaking - A surprising number of people plan kitchens with building code violations that can be costly to fix. Common mistakes include poor or nonexistent venting above the cooktop, building cabinets less than 12 inches from the cooktop, using non-tempered glass in cabinets that require them and putting too many appliances on one circuit.A better plan is to choose lower cabinets that offer the most storage options, Foslein said.Kitchen SpiceKitchen Blueprint Windows If you are lucky to have one or many, do they open in or out, slide up or down? Make sure the window is not obstructed by a faucet or competes with the height of an appliance.Having the gift of creative foresight means the ability to visualize the final product before it is completed. It's like a chef knowing the spices needed for that special recipe. Creative foresight means selecting countertops, wood finishes, cabinets, flooring, and even door handles in the right colors and textures to pull off that picture-perfect new kitchen. For a lot of people, this could spell disaster. Fortunately it's easy to seek professional help to ensure your new kitchen fits your lifestyle, space, and budgetary guidelines.Bosch also shines the spotlight on its newest collection of professional ranges brimming with advancements. As with its award-winning dishwasher line, the new product structure divides the ranges into two design lines -- the Evolution(TM) Series, consisting of freestanding ranges, and the Integra(TM) Series, consisting of slide-in ranges with a flush-to-counter appearance. Both offer the European styling, high performance and ease-of-use for which Bosch ranges are known. Among the new models are the Integra and Evolution Pro(TM) Range with a full stainless steel exterior for a powerful presence in any kitchen. In addition, the 30" Dual Fuel Convection Range was rated #1 among similar models by a leading consumer publication.Ceramic Electric CooktopsIn addition to the shape or layout, it's really important to understand the special relationship between the three classic kitchen workflows. Sometimes referred to as the kitchen triangle, the three points of the workflow or action are 1) sink, 2) stove/oven, and 3) refrigerator. A well designed kitchen will permit the cook to move unimpeded between these three points within a short distance.

"When you're planning your kitchen, remember, it pays to get a good, well-made cabinet."

Planning Your Kitchen Getting the Right Fit

Like tailoring for a fitted jacket' a fitted kitchen is planned, built, and/or fixed to properly fill or cover a specific space and shape. In this case, the space is the heart of your home, the kitchen. To achieve a pleasing, functional, and affordable design it is important to find the appropriate measure of planning, creative foresight, and implementation techniques to ensure success with your project. Whether the target for your fitted kitchen is London, Los Angeles or Lisbon, let's consider these aspects:

Investment dysfunction - Is your kitchen really ugly, or just not working for you, yet you refuse to admit it? U-Shape: Again, as the name suggest, this layout is in the shape of a U and typically combines the L-Shape and Galley. The U Shape has cupboards and workspace on three adjoining sides. Single or multiple kitchen suppliers?Bosch's new touch control ceramic electric cooktops take the brand's previous lineup of cooktops a step beyond in performance, flexibility and affordability. Divided into three classes, the cooktops offer many industry exclusives such as POWERBOIL(TM), which uses 100% of wattage for faster boil-up, and PRECISIONSIM(TM), offering a wider range of simmering options. The 5 and 6 Series models feature a turn-off timer to reduce overflow, while the 4 Series features a countdown timer. With all of these great features and a 36" touch control electric cooktop priced under $1000, the Bosch cooktops are certain to be a consumer favorite. The cooktops are also available with mechanical controls for customers who prefer the more intuitive turn of a classic knob design. The line will be available beginning in August 2006.Other new Bosch products featured include an expanded lineup for its award-winning Nexxt(R) laundry system, new ceramic electric cooktops, the Benvenuto(TM) Built-In Fully Automatic Coffee Maker, top-rated Evolution and Integra dishwashers, powerful wall ovens and ventilation. Providing a cozy and inviting atmosphere, fresh-baked cookies straight from Bosch's ovens will be served by the "Bosch Homemaker" every hour in the booth. Also in celebration of the brand's heritage, German beer and cheese will be available to booth visitors the first two days of the show, between 4 and 5 p.m. Contingent plans for delays?"When you're planning your kitchen, remember, it pays to get a good, well-made cabinet.""Columns and corbels should only be used at the end of a run of cabinets, or to offset a major design piece, like an island or a farmhouse sink," he said."Bosch's position as the fastest growing premium brand is reflected in our showing at K/BIS. We are pleased to complete the Bosch kitchen with the introduction of the Evolution Refrigerator, while firmly establishing our strength in the cooking category with the Evolution and Integra Ranges," said Franz J. Bosshard, president and CEO.Wood-matching disorder - Few things make customers crazier than trying to pick a wood for cabinets, especially when they are trying to make an exact match with the furniture or the flooring. For the first time ever, Bosch offers a refrigeration line -- the Evolution -- allowing consumers to have a complete Bosch kitchen. The counter-depth Evolution Refrigerators have colored sides and hidden hinges, providing a built-in look without the expense. Advanced sensors constantly monitor the climate to provide consistent cooling and control of the defrost cycle, and external temperature controls allow users to adjust the temperature without opening the door, preventing the loss of cool air. The refrigerators offer additional special features such as the SUPERCOOL(TM) and SUPERFREEZE(TM) functions, which cool the interior of the refrigerator or freezer to compensate for warmed up groceries. The Evolution Refrigerator will be available in stainless steel, black, white and the new stainless look beginning in July 2006."I was in a kitchen recently that literally had fluted columns between every cabinet," said Decora kitchen designer Neal Luck, owner of NHL Kitchen Designs in Long Beach, Calif. "Not only was it gaudy to look at, but they wasted a staggering amount of space. G-Shape: With space usually at a premium, a G Shape layout has work surfaces on two walls and a third coming off at an angle.Bosch boldly expands its foray into cooking with its Evolution and Integra Series Ranges. The Evolution line builds on the superior versatility, value and ease-of-use established with the brand's first line of freestanding ranges, while the Integra Series, with its built-in appearance, provides consumers another brilliant option. Both lines offer numerous exclusive features that made the first line of ranges so desirable such as the CLEARTOUCH(TM) glass control panels, Genuine European Convection(TM), POWERSIM(TM) burner system and Touch and Turn(TM) oven controls, and the Integra models have the largest oven capacity in their class (4.6 cu. ft.). New exclusives that take the performance a step further include EXXACTEMP(TM) Oven, a temperature system that monitors the top and bottom elements for superior performance, OPTISIM(TM) burner, and an upgraded 16,000 BTU POWERSIM(TM) burner. The full line of Bosch Evolution Ranges will begin rolling out to the market in the Summer of 2006.Embellishment mania - Corbels, columns and decorative molding make a kitchen distinctive, unless you've overdone it.Evolution(TM) and Integra(TM) RangesNexxt(TM) Laundry Removal of construction debris, old appliances, etc.?Shape and layout needs to be accompanied with precision dimensions. Knowing the size of appliances is only a small portion of completing your kitchen's blueprint. Measuring a room incorrectly is the most common cause for fitting problems. Quality fitted kitchens will utilize every inch within the kitchen and like a good recipe, plans for the right ingredients. The first critical step to building your kitchen design plan is having precise dimensions and understanding the layout of the space you are ultimately looking to build or to fit.Bosch home appliances is part of BSH Home Appliances Corporation, a fully owned subsidiary of Bosch und Siemens Hausgerate, GmbH, the third largest home appliance manufacturer in the world. Inspired by the lifestyle of today's discerning consumers, all Bosch products combine superior performance and excellent quality with unrivaled ease-of-use. Use of a carousel in the corner is important to minimize loss of functional space.Appliance fever - This occurs when clients insist on having a 72- inch Viking range in an 8- by 10-foot kitchen. They may have six burners, but nowhere to store a pan.

Like so many things in life, there may not be a right way or wrong way to implement your complete fitted kitchen. Know your strengths and be conscious of your limits. Let the costly mistakes be minimized, hire professionals to help you execute on your dream space, rather than find yourself fit to be tied!'
